Giles Ross was born 18 Mar 1845 in Falls, Wyoming, Pennsylvania, United States. He was the son of David Ross and Charlotte (Olmstead) Ross, brother of James Nelson Ross, Lydia (Ross) Griffing, David Ross, Delilah (Ross) Covert, Miles Ross, Mary Elizabeth (Ross) Sites, Esther (Ross) Moore, John Wilbur Ross, Wilson Eugene Ross and Charlotte Rosanna Ross.

Giles was the husband of Anna Margaret (Bastuscheck) Ross, married in 1879 in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. He later died 23 April 1923 at age 78 in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne, Pennsylvania, United States.

Giles served in Company A, 88th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, during the Civil War. Mustered in on September 24, 1862. Discharged by G. O., June 10, 1865. Giles kept his hands in military activities by affiliating with the Wyoming Artillerists state company in the 1870s:

The newly organized Wyoming Artillerists have been mustered into the State service, and are now engaged in drilling every evening, prior to going to Scranton on the 16th, where they will be inspected by General Osborne, and reviewed by the Governor and staff. The company will receive, on or about July 1st, a new regulation uniform with additional field pieces--parrott guns, &c. The newly elected officers are J. E. Tillman, Captain; Giles Ross, 1st Lieutenant, and Tom C. Parker, 2d Lieutenant, who are taking an active part in forming a company of men who, in time, will rank second to none in the State of Pennsylvania.)--Daily Record of the Times (Wilkes-Barre, PA), May 12, 1876, p. 3.

Giles Ross, contractor and builder, Wilkes-Barre, was born in Falls township, Luzerne (now Wyoming) county, Pa., March 18, 1845, and is a son of David and Charlotte (Olmstead) Ross. His paternal grandfather, who was a native of England, born of Scotch parentage, came to America about 1790, and was one of the pioneers of what is now Moscow, Pa., where he resided many years; in later life he removed to Michigan, and died there. Of his family, David, father of subject, was born in Luzerne county in December, 1806, near Moscow, and lived in Luzerne county, dying there at the age of eighty-three years. His wife was a daughter of David Olmstead, of Falls township, and by her he had sixteen children, eleven of whom grew to maturity, viz.: James N., Lydia (Mrs. Joseph Griffin), David, Delilah (Mrs. John Covert), Miles, Mary (Mrs. John Sites), Esther (Mrs. Charles L. Moore), Giles, John W., Wilson E. and Charlotte R. Our subject was reared in Ross township, this county, and was educated in the common schools. On September 24. 1864, he enlisted in Company A, Eighty-eighth Pennsylvania Volunteers, participating in all the battles of the Fifth Corps, Army of the Potomac, which took place after his enlistment, and was honorably discharged at close of the war. He then located in Wilkes-Barre, where he learned the carpenter's trade, after which he worked as a journeyman from 1868 to 1876, when he embarked in business for himself. In 1879 Mr. Ross married Anna, daughter of John Bastuscheck. of Wilkes-Barre, and has three children: John D., Charlotte M. and Giles G. Mr. Giles Ross is a member of the G. A. After years of service to his community and to his country, Giles Ross, aged 78, well known veteran of the Civil War and one of the valley's most highly esteemed citizens, passed away at his home, 345 South River street, last evening, at 7 o'clock, following a short illness of complications. He was a former commander of Conyngham Post 7, G. A. R, and has been a. trustee of the post for a long period of years. For many years Mr. Ross occupied an enviable position among the leading contractors and builders of the valley, Giles Ross was born In Falls Township, Wyoming County, March 18, 1845, and was the son of David and Charlotte Olmstead Ross. His paternal grandfather was a native of England, born of Scotch parentage, and came to America about 1790, being one of the pioneers of what is now Moscow, Pa. Giles Ross was reared in Ross Township, Luzerne County, being educated in the public schools. On September 24, 1864, he enlisted In Company A, Eighty-eighth Pennsylvania Volunteers, participating in all the battles of the Fifth Army Corps, Army of the Potomac, which took place after his enlistment, and was honorably discharged at the close of the Civil War. Following the war, Mr. Ross located in Wilkes-Barre, where he learned the carpenter trade, after which he worked as a Journeyman from 1868 until 187S, when be embarked In business, for himself. In 1879 he married Anna Bastuscheck, of this city. The deceased was always a staunch Republican and served for eight years on the old Wilkes-Barre council. He held the. command of Conyngham post 97, G. A. R, and at his death was a member of its board of trustees. He retired from active public life four years ago, . when his health began to fall. He Is survived by his wife and the following sons and daughter: Charlotte M. Ross, of this city; John D. Ross, of Pittsburg, and Giles G. Ross of this city.
